The ease of cleaning largely depends on the bathtub’s material. Here are the most common materials used in freestanding bathtubs and how they compare in terms of maintenance:
Acrylic: Lightweight, affordable, and very popular. Acrylic tubs have a smooth, non-porous surface that resists stains and grime. They are generally the easiest to clean and require only mild soap and water.
Fiberglass: Similar to acrylic, fiberglass is lightweight and easy to clean. However, it’s more prone to scratching and fading over time.
Cast Iron (enamel-coated): Extremely durable and retains heat well. The enamel coating is glossy and relatively easy to wipe down, though you must avoid abrasive cleaners to prevent damaging the finish.
Solid Surface / Stone Resin: These are premium materials with a matte, seamless look. They're non-porous and quite easy to maintain, but they may require special cleaners recommended by the manufacturer.
Copper or Brass: These high-end tubs develop a natural patina over time. They’re not difficult to clean but require special care to preserve their unique finish.
Verdict: Acrylic and stone resin tubs are among the easiest to clean regularly. Enamel-coated cast iron also ranks high, with the added benefit of being highly durable.
Unlike built-in tubs, which are surrounded by walls on multiple sides, freestanding bathtubs are placed away from walls—sometimes even in the center of the bathroom. This design gives you 360-degree access, which can actually make cleaning easier.
However, ease of access depends on how the tub is installed:
Fully exposed tubs (space on all sides) are the easiest to clean, as you can reach behind and around them with no issue.
Tubs placed near walls may be harder to clean in tight corners or behind the tub, especially if there’s little clearance between the tub and the wall.
Freestanding tubs with claw feet or a raised base allow you to clean underneath easily, while flat-bottom tubs sitting flush with the floor may trap dust or moisture beneath them.
Tip: If you're planning a new bathroom, leave at least 6–10 inches of space around the tub for easy cleaning access.
Here’s a simple routine to keep your freestanding bathtub clean and looking brand new:
Rinse the tub with warm water to remove soap residue and body oils.
Wipe it down with a soft microfiber cloth or sponge.
Mix warm water with a mild, non-abrasive bathroom cleaner or dish soap.
Use a soft cloth or sponge to wipe the entire surface, including the interior and outer walls.
For tough stains or soap scum, use a mix of baking soda and vinegar or a gentle tub-specific cleaner.
Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Dry with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots or streaks.
Use a bathtub cleaner that’s safe for your tub’s material.
Pay special attention to any buildup near the drain, edges, or base.
If you have hard water, consider using a descaler or white vinegar soak to prevent mineral buildup.
Freestanding tubs located in homes with hard water may develop mineral deposits over time. To prevent this:
Wipe the tub dry after each use.
Use vinegar-based cleaners once a month to dissolve calcium build-up.
Avoid using steel wool, magic erasers, or abrasive sponges. These may dull the surface.
Use a non-scratch sponge and mild cleanser.
For small scratches, polish with a fine automotive polishing compound.
Freestanding tubs can attract dust and hair underneath or behind the base.
Use a vacuum with a brush attachment or a microfiber mop to clean around the base regularly.
In summary, freestanding bathtubs are generally easy to clean, especially when made from low-maintenance materials like acrylic or stone resin. Their accessible design often makes them even easier to wipe down than traditional built-in tubs.
However, regular maintenance is key. Neglecting weekly cleaning or allowing soap scum and mineral deposits to build up will make any tub harder to clean over time. By following a simple routine and using gentle cleaning tools, you can keep your freestanding bathtub sparkling clean with minimal effort.
